Designed an AI-powered app to support communication for older adults
Context
Many older adults, especially those with Alzheimer’s, struggle to maintain conversational skills, and families need simple tools to support them.
I created an app to help older adults converse, with a design that makes interaction simple, clear, and intuitive
Key needs
Key needs were enabling both older adults and caregivers to use the app easily, with clear controls and straightforward interactions
Hierarchy first: One primary focus per screen.
Straightforward microcopy: Simple action verbs.
Predictable gestures: large buttons in accessible zones, no deep menus, and a layout that minimizes confusion.
Challenges
A major challenge was limited time and budget, so I relied on research and competitive analysis instead of user testing
This involved reviewing accessibility guidelines, benchmarking senior-focused apps, and applying usability heuristics to ensure clarity, legibility, and a low cognitive load.
UI System
I built a reusable UI system to maintain consistency and streamline development
This included defining color tokens, typography, spacing, and reusable components like buttons, toggles, and cards, iterating continuously to simplify implementation.
Design Decisions
I designed the main screens and flows, guiding the structure, hierarchy, and core interactions for accessibility
